Booking Your Driving Test

Once you've passed your theory you can start to think about the practical test. We would recommend that you talk this over with your instructor prior to booking to ensure that he thinks you are ready and also to make sure they are available for the test date. The instructor is trained to help you pass and understands what level your driving needs to be at to be successful. If the instructor doesn't think you are driving consistently well enough to pass the test then its best to discuss a possible time scale so you can prepare yourself for the test. Setting goals can be a good way to keep focused, but unrealistic expectations will only frustrate you and cause unnecessary stress.

Booking your test

If your instructor thinks you're ready and you're feeling confident then it's now time to book your test. The easist way to book your practical test is to use the DVSA's Online Booking Service. If you would rather speak to someone when booking your test you can call the booking line on 0300 200 1122. Whichever way you choose to book you will need to have your provisional licence at hand, as well as your Theory Test certificate number and a valid debit or credit card. If you have any special needs or require assistance to take your practical test then please use the booking line to speak to an advisor and arrange your test. Test fees vary depending on when the test is taken. Tests taken during a week day before 3PM are charged at £62. Tests taken in the evening or during a weekend are charged at £75. Please note that evening tests are only conducted in the summer months.

Cancelling or rearranging a test

If you have booked a test that you are unable to attend and you wish to cancel or rearrange it for a later date then you must provide notice to the DVSA at least 3 working days before the test date. Should you fail to inform the DVSA that you do not wish to take the test before this time then your test fees will not be refunded. All cancellations made with sufficient notice will be refunded at no extra cost. You can cancel or rearrange a lesson with the DVSA via the online management option provided on the booking page or you can call the DVSA booking office and speak to an operator

Tests cancelled by the DVSA

There are times when the DVSA may have to cancel your booking. The DVSA will not conduct a test if they feel the conditions are not safe for the test to be taken. In conditions where the safety of the driver or the examiner may be at risk due to bad light or adverse weather conditions the DVSA will postpone the test. Your test will then be rescheduled at no further cost but compensation cannot be claimed. If you have any concerns about the weather conditions before your test you should call your local driving test centre to see if they are still conducting the examinations. Here you can find your local test centre

Should the driving test not be completed because of reasons that can be attributed to yourself or the vehicle in which you choose to take the test then you will not be refunded. The DVSA reserve the right to cancel the test if they feel that the correct conditions have not been met. If you are taking a test with your instructor's car then they will make sure that the car is fit for the test. If you choose to take the test in your own vehicle then the responsibility is with you to ensure that it is acceptable for the test. This includes providing a valid MOT for the vehicle and that it is road worthy in all other aspects. You must ensure that you are fully insured on the car which you are taking the test in and that you display L Plates. You will also be required to provide an interior mirror for the examiners use.
